I use the monitor sleep function in the details portion of the Energy
Saver Control panel. Mine is set to sleep the monitor after about 40
min. of no activity.  As long as I don't tell the computer to go to
sleep also, I don't have the intermittent problem of it loosing track
of the monitor (like Lynette mentioned). I doubt there is anything
wrong with the monitor software.

PS that free upgrade from Apple is about a 30 MB download.  I might
also be offered as a series of smaller downloads.  so it could take
some time on a standard modem. But If you have a friend with a really
fast connection and a CD burner, you might ask for a favor.
