I, too thought it must be a simple answer to something that kept
changing even though I couldn't detect when I changed it.
My pencil/brush cursor changed from a circle, which matched the size of
the brush I was using, to crosshairs that I couldn't see on s creen. In
Help, I read that if you use the eyedropper tool on some color, any
color, it would change the pencil/brushes from the crosshairs  back to
the circle that I COULD see. Apparently it works, but I still don't
know how I manage to turn it to crosshairs.
(Maybe it was the Caps Lock???, Andrew?)
