First National Mtg., 1979, July 26-29, Hunt Botanical Library, Carnegie
Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. Alice Tangerini took the lead in
getting the work done to make this meeting happen. Personal highlights:
Guest Speaker Don Eckelberry was only expected to give his talk, and
then leave, but he stayed for the whole conference, fully participated,
and was a great guy. Elaine Hodges liked a drawing of mine displayed in
the first annual exhibit; a portion of it wound up in "The Book."

Second National Mtg., 1980, Nov. 16-19, Savannah, GA. Personal
highlights: learning art techniques from Trudy Nicholson, then scouting
out Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House for the best food in the city.

Third National Mtg., 1981, June 26-28, Gainesville, FL. Air temperature
was 95 degrees Fahrenheit at 9 am on the first morning of the
conference. The gators on the lake shore discouraged casual field
outings.

Fourth National Mtg., 1982, Aug. 4-7, Seattle, WA. I didn't attend this
one.

Fifth National Mtg., 1983, July 26-30, Ann Arbor, MI. Robert Bateman
was the keynote speaker, and the lesser known speakers and workshop
leaders were all excellent too.

Sixth National Mtg., 1984, June 16-22, at my alma mater, RISD in
Providence, RI.

I took a bit of a hiatus from GNSI at this point. I think that the
seventh, 1985 conference was supposed to be in San Francisco. Someone
else will have to pick up the story from here.
