For book/magazine Print work, scans of 300-450ppi are preferred. They are examined from only a few 
inches so the detail is needed.

Banners, posters, and murals are examined from further away. The standard on these is often 150dpi 
for artwork at print size.  But depending on the image and the printer you can get usable results at 
50dpi.  The more fine the lines and text you have in the pixel image, the more likely you will want 
to be at he 150dpi end of the scale.

There are professional large flatbed scanners available at some prepress houses that can handle up 
to 24 inches, but for larger stuff a high end digital art camera is used to capture images of the art.
