I believe Goethe wrote about the importance of illustrations in his
Metamorphosis of Plants (published 1790), section 102.

Subject: [SCIART] Searching for a Quote citation

Dear Smart people,

The GNSI has been using this phrase in its literature for any years:

"Goethe has been quoted as observing that you really do not see a plant
until you draw it"

But it has been so long that the Goeth quote has been separated from the
source. Do any of you have a reference that could help us nail down the
origin?

Britt Griswold
GNSI
