Science News. Something in every issue is sure to catch their
attention. There's also a Science News for Kids
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/ but why not pay them the
compliment of assuming they can read the grown-ups' magazine?

I've been reading Science News since elementary school. I just
bestowed a pile of recent issues on some high school kids in Trenton
NJ who take part in a wonderful program, ScienceMentors
http://www.sciencementors.org/

As a science/medicine editor and curator, I often recommend the
magazine as a model of expository writing. (I'm sure it has shaped my
own.)
