PRESENTATION: Painting by Number: The Art and Science of Data Visualization

With the man who created the famous "Blue Marble" image of Earth, come explore the art of creating information graphics and eye-popping Earth imagery from satellite data. NASA's Robert Simmon will address such questions as:

-Why does an understanding of visual perception result in the creation of images that distort the data from which they're made?
-How do those same rules guide the creation of maps and figures that are read quickly and accurately?
-What's wrong with the ubiquitous "rainbow palette," anyway?
-Discover what we have forgotten that designers and cartographers knew 50 (or 150) years ago.
-What is "data visualization" and how is it different from art and, yet, still an art?
-Learn how dropping out of a graduate program in materials science resulted in a job with NASA!
