For our GNSI-DC October meeting, we are honored to have with us Robert Simmon, a data visualizer from NASA, who will show us some very unique information graphics and imagery, including that of our home planet. Don't miss this opportunity to see some of the most beautiful scenes of Earth from a perspective we rarely see -- from space -- and it's all made with data from satellite. Come see how it's done!
MEETING: October 15, 2013 - Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
PRESENTATION: Painting by Number: The Art and Science of Data Visualization
With the man who created the famous "Blue Marble" image of Earth, come explore the art of creating information graphics and eye-popping Earth imagery from satellite data. NASA's Robert Simmon will address such questions as:
-Why does an understanding of visual perception result in the creation of images that distort the data from which they're made?
-How do those same rules guide the creation of maps and figures that are read quickly and accurately?
-What's wrong with the ubiquitous "rainbow palette," anyway?
-Discover what we have forgotten that designers and cartographers knew 50 (or 150) years ago.
-What is "data visualization" and how is it different from art and, yet, still an art?
-Learn how dropping out of a graduate program in materials science resulted in a job with NASA!
