I've always been bothered by this problem, but I haven't found

When introducing a person to a hobby (any hobby) you want to
be welcoming, make it easy, give people a chance to feel a sense
of mastery at something.

People join groups when they feel liked, accepted, and feel they
can belong.

But in the SCA, one of the first tasks we require is that you
pick an SCA name.  It's really hard to participate without one.

BUT: the truth is, that developing an AUTHENTIC name is hard
to do, and it requires research and knowledge.  What, to the
new or uninitiated seems like it ought to be easy, turns out
to be an exercise in saying "No" or "You don't know enough".

Frustrating to be sure.  And unwelcoming.  As a former active
herald, I tried as hard as I could to make the process
easy, fun, and welcoming.  But it always seems like it is
harder than it should be.
