Just checking if we are still on, or if everyone is just being quiet these
days!Oh, but I do have a question.
Are there many companies these days that are using scientific
illustratorsto develop educational CDs and software, other than Museums?At
GNSI in Flagstaff some people were discussing animation and modeling
projects for exhibit work, but how common are scientific illustrators used
in private industry (whether it be publishing, software, games,
etc...)?Just curious!

Hello Polly, I was wondering if we were still on the air also. I have sent two

While I do not see my own messages, I was wondering if anyone was receiving

I haven't a clue as to how many science illustrators are working on CDs. I know
of three GNSI members involved in such things, none at a museum.

list. She will be here thru 1996, I believe, finishing the second one.
Both are on Diptera. The first one, on the "Expert System" to help
people identify fruit flies, has cover drawings originally done by
Britt Griswold and adapted by Jenny for the jewel case. Pretty fancy!

Hello Sci Ill group,
I have had numerous experiences in my 6 years at College of Veterinary Medicine creating animations
and illustrations for us in computer aided instruction. Parasite lifecyles top the list as the longest subject
continuing to be animated. Within the past year these "modules" have been produced on CD for
sell to other Vet schools or other interested partys.
Faculty members on Mac tend to use Authorware Professional (AWP)
for the currculum developemnt and delivery of the program.
I use Macromedia Director (MMD) for the animations that are incorporated into the programs.
Within the past 2 years interactive commands scripted into MMD movies are
active when MMD is played through an AWP program.
IBM Faculty also use MMD created movies by me. Because of the variety of EXPORT options that
MMD can accomplish IBMers can use animations I created on my Mac system. A CD on Internal
Parasites of the Horse was published this summer.
Previous to the CD production, our Vet school subscribed to the Videodisc storage option for
computer aided instruction. Mac and IBM computer stations have a TV monitor and laserdisc attached
so that the students interacted with the computer for lessons. These programs 'cue' the user to look at
TV monitor for display of videofootage or animations.
Currently, CD ROM is the perferred way to go and many Videodisc programs will be converted or
upgraded to diaplay on Computer monitor.
Our Educational Resources departement has a CD ROM burner.
We use this for archiving, not for mass production.

Director you may be able to afford ($800) Authorware you can not, unless you are
a serious develpoer ($3000). For that kind of money it better be able to write
scripts for me.
Give me a Rack of silicon graphics work stations and 100,000 worth of software,

'What a fascinating email....Do you also do the script writing,

The scripting that I have experience in is related to control within the animations.
Play,rewind,pause and stop action commands on buttons in the movie so that the viewer can
do these things. I created these buttons and apply the appropriate commands to them.
Movie scripts have included overall command of "continue when mouse is clicked".
This goes with specificly placed "pause" as the movie or Presentation (MMD is a great presentation
production software) plays. The pause can be as long as necessary until the user clicks mouse to
initate continued play of movie.
The sounds that have been placed in these movies are digitized. LUB & DUB for Canine Cardiac Cycle,
heart beating showing insde chambers,blood flow and value open and close.
And a cat's meow, for Neurological Exam of the Cat and Dog. As the stimulus is applyed to the cat it
turns it's head and responses with a meow.

This Technology Magazine covers many equipment, issues, products and case studies as related to

Hi Everyone:
Marlene and I would like to know if 24Mb RAM will allow us to run Photoshop
fairly effectively, presuming we are not working in color. We are considering a
PowerMac 7200 with that 24Mb RAM. We don't have any more money than that, so
that seems like our only choice...unless we buy a lower end system like a used
Quadra with more RAM... Whatever we get we may have to live with for up to two
years. (Right now we can't even open Photoshop 3.0.)

Hi Polly,
You are refering to the Video Toaster, for the Amiga platform. It is a very
powerful little system (probably kept the whole platform afloat while Amiga
was rescued) that is used for broadcast quality animations and video
effects. Many of the flying logos of regional TV stations were created on
it. It is very pricy. I think that a basic system add_on is about $7000
(US). It goes up from there. It is still a bargain compared to the
dedicated systems that it competes with.

It's called the Video Toaster and while it seems amazing, it really is true,
someone in Topeka, Kansas developed it. We haven't heard much about it

Hello Everyone!
Sorry it has taken me so long to voice myself here on the listserv, but I recen
tly changed email addresses from the University of Maryland to the National Mus
eum of Natural History hewre at the Smithsonian. I heard from Elaine Hodges (j
ust down the hall form me) that people had questions about fruit flies (by the
way, Drosophila are not really taxonomically considered Tephritids (fruit flies
) but they belong to another family called "vinegar flies", so you wont see the
m on this CD ROM we've been producing). And questions about CD ROMS with illus
trations, etc.
Well, here I am so fire away. Just to let you know alittle bit about what I am
doing here, I will be working for the Systematic Entomology LAboratory in the
Diptera unit until about the FAll of 1997. We are currently trying to finish u
p a CD ROM "Expert System" which enables users to identify Tephritids with the
aid of character illustrations (scientific illustrations of different morpholog
ical aspects of the fruit flies). It's like a traditional key only its compute
rized and works by process of elimiination rather than the usual step by step b
ook key. The user can choose what characters he or she would like to use in or
derto identify the fly rateher than going by what a book would traditionally do
At any rate, Britt Griswold, Susan Gruppe, and I have been doing the illustr
ations for this database. now Iam finishing up the last 40 or so illustrations
which will be on the CD ROM. The logo for this project was created by Britt,
and I adapted it for the cd jewl box cover and the disk itself. Hopefully this
will be at the press and be out by the summer. As for seeing any of it, its n
ot on the internet, though I am working on some other things for the internet.
It will be on display though, this summer at a library exhibit at the Natural H
istory museum and then eventually be in an exhibit called something like "the P
ast Present and Future of Scientific Illustration" here at the museumso if you
are here for the Guild Convention in July you will seeit!
The other project, which I am really here for is a Costa Rican Biodiversity pro
ject in which we are going to repatriate biodiversity info to Cosat Rica by goi
ng through our Diptera collection and putting images (photos and scientific ill
ustrations) and data on the collection on CD ROM and the WWW.

Video-Toaster: originally designed to work on the Amiga System, I think they
were going to port it to a new platform. It is being used for TV quality
Animation Special effects in Sequest and other sci-fi shows on the Networks.
I believe it is basicly the equivelent of a page layout program for video. You
still need a 3-D program to construct basic art which is then "flown around" in
Video Toaster. One may come with the program.

Hi Girl,
Keep in mind that Photoshop likes to see three times the amount of RAM over
file size. This means that you will be limited to 8 meg files. In
grayscale, for most applications this would be adequate. But for high res
(450 dpi) files to be sent to Allen Press, I found that I have been working
on files between 10 and 18 megs. Keep in mind that added layers and
channels build up the file size as you work. Also, if you use Photo CDs:
grayscale is loaded in As RGB @ 18 megs. Of course you can modify the color
depth to grayscale before you begin working in earnest, but as you can see,
you are cutting it close.
The otherside of the coin is that I ALWAYS recommend buying the biggest,
baddest machine you afford . . . .and upgrading later.

24mb is OK especilly if you are only doing Greyscale. Besides, you can always
add more RAM (weddle it out of them).
Personally I would prefer an 8500/16/2GB/4xCD, But what can you do, if you are
on a buget?
I dare not say more, as you know, you can never have to much speed and size when
it comes to graphics, epecially Photoshop....
At least get the 90mhz version.

visited....I very much enjoy seeing other illustrators' work....and

The new buzz on the Toaster is that it is being ported over to PC. While
this new version looks really strong, there has apparently been unveiled a
competing PC system that looks even more amazing. The full blown system,
pricey for us individuals at around $20 grand, is creating broadcast
quality animated 3D graphics that rivals the $200 SGI systems! I'll have to
look up the name of this one.

With proper lighting and filters, the Kodak Digital cameras do a very good job
of making images that are "good". More than adequit for web work. The least
expensive way to put slides on line and arguabley the best methond of saving the
images for the long term is Kodak Photo CD, Kodak is developing new protocals so
that viewers can call up photoCD images directly from thier native format and
even zoom in on details pulled from the High res versions right over the web via
plug-ins to popular viewer software.

Hi Willow,
As a matter of fact I just finished a little side project here at work for a pr
esentation my mentor needed for the Entomological Society convention. He neede
d photos that could be placed into digital format. This is a quick and simple p
rocess, especially if you want to avoid the hassle of buying the right film, ge
tting your film developed, worrying about filling up the whole roll, waiting fo
r processing, etc. If you are doing something that is quick, then I suggest us
ing the Kodak Digital Camara. The camara works very simply: you take a picture
(has auto focus, you can turn the flash on and off, you also have an auto time
r, and you can change the exposure). The picture is stored in the camara in dig
ital format. This particular camara holds 48 shots at about 1.1 MB each. The
n using software called Kodak Photoenhancer, you retrieve your images, edit the
m or export them to Photoshop where you can do more. HOWEVER: yes there are li
mitations! We used the camara to get shots of people and our facilities. Doin
g something a little more detailed like plants and such might be a little more
difficult to capture the detail you want. The focal length only allows you to
stand as close as 4 feet away from your subject. The resolution of the images
is excellent for "people pictures" or larger less detailed objects. Otherwise,
if you want more detail, I would suggest using you traditional 35mm SLR with a
zoom lens. With this you can use slide film (which can be scanned with a slide
scanner and put into Photoshop, or get the pictures developed and scan them in
using a flatbed scanner. I know that Penn Camara and other places like Ritz ca
n put your shots on CD-ROM where you can import them for Web pages and things..
however I have never done that so I can't tell you about the quality. These d
igital camaras are good for fast importing of images without all the intermedia
te steps and run anywhere between $600 to about $1200. The most common ones I
have seen run for about $950 or so. (oh...and yes they are full color) The lens
on the one I am using is f/2.8 (42 mm equiv). FOr what we are doing with insec
ts, the digital camara is a waste because our subjects are too small, so a micr
oscope with a camara attachment (either 35mm or video) is used. There are lots
of ways to do plants I suppose, it depends on what you want to do.
To Jaynie: Our Costa Rican project is geared toward the WWW so you'll be able t
o see it in '96.

Jennifer is correct about the consumer level Kodak camera. If you are serious
about going digital with your camera, Kodak also makes several high end 35mm
models based on Nikon standard bodies that will produce up to 18MB files, 36bit
color and if captured well, are the equivallent of 35mm film to PhotoCD
convertion. But it is not inexpensive.Expect to spend $10,000. before you are
through. This makes the Standard film to photoCD option look very attractive if
you already have good camera gear.

If you are doing something that is quick, then I suggest us
ing the Kodak Digital Camara. The camara works very simply: you take a picture
(has auto focus, you can turn the flash on and off, you also have an auto time
r, and you can change the exposure). The picture is stored in the camara in dig
ital format. This particular camara holds 48 shots at about 1.1 MB each.
HOWEVER: yes there are limitations! We used the camara to get shots of people
and our facilities. Doin
g something a little more detailed like plants and such might be a little more
difficult to capture the detail you want. The focal length only allows you to
stand as close as 4 feet away from your subject. The resolution of the images
is excellent for "people pictures" or larger less detailed objects. Otherwise,
if you want more detail, I would suggest using you traditional 35mm SLR with a
zoom lens. With this you can use slide film (which can be scanned with a slide
scanner and put into Photoshop, or get the pictures developed and scan them in
using a flatbed scanner. I know that Penn Camara and other places like Ritz ca
n put your shots on CD-ROM where you can import them for Web pages and things.

Well, all its THAT time of year!!I'm going south for the holidays and won't
be back until they open the University up on the 2nd! Sooooo, that means
SciArt-L will be a bit quiet for a week or so(after today)! I hope you have

something to put a smile on your face!Particularly those of you who work
with the scientists sooooo closely!ONLY a scientist would think this

Santa and the Scientific Method:
1) No known species of reindeer can fly. But it is estimated that there are
300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of
these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying
reindeer, which only Santa has ever seen.
2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. But since
Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist
children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total - 378 million
according to the Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate
of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes
there's at least one good child in each.
3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different
time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west
(which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is
to say
that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of
a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the
stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever
snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and
move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops
are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be
false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now
talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2 million
miles, not
counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus
feeding and etc. This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per
second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the
fastest man-made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4
miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.
4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming
that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds),
the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably
described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more
than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could
pull ten times the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even
nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even
counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison
- this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.
5) 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air
resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as
spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer
will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy, per second,.each. In short,
they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer
behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire
reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second.
Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times
greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim)
would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.
In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's
dead now or REALLY thin!

We've experimented a little with that (with butterfly photos), but
unfortunately it isn't very practical for us as we are a four-hr. drive
from the Costa Rican capitol, San Jose, AND they do not process film to
photo cd there.
Even film processing is a bit of a hassle here, and the quality leaves
something to be desired. So the instant results of a digital camera are
very tempting. If we get one, and experiment with the close-up lenses,
I'll let you all know how it goes.
Merry Christmas ... probably a white one for most of you (quite green here
in Costa Rica).

I understand your situation. But certainly, all the negs and slides you already
have that you want on the web could be sent to the states for convertion to
photoCD at $1-2 a scan. If you have the expertise, and time on your hands, you
could spend a lot of time doing scans on a desktop scanner, but it is nice to
let someone else do it when it cost so little.
I just saw an article on a new electronic camera with closeup lenses, lets you
get as close as 5 inches, retail $999 for the camera, $129 for the close-up
lenses. Makes a 640x480 res picture. Don't know the quality.
