DESCRIPTION

The Department of Entomology, College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking an enthusiastic scientist to lead efforts on identification of arthropod pests, which impact biosecurity, food security, and public health. The successful candidate will respond to inquiries and requests for information from the public and will participate in one or more Penn State Extension teams such as the Horticulture Team. Success in this position will lead to a reduction in pesticide use and improvements in water quality, biosecurity, and public health. Candidates must possess effective communication skills (verbal and written), teaching skills, interpersonal skills, ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and clientele, and work as an active member of the Department and Extension team. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university is required. The individual also must be able to work effectively in a team and with diverse populations and audiences. While not a requirement, the ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus. Responsibilities: Handling and processing of insect and arthropod samples submitted to the Department of Entomology for identification. Development of innovative educational materials (print, web-based, audio and video) for Penn State Extension and the general public focusing on commonly occurring household and ornamental insects and their management is expected. Assists with training Penn State Extension educators on identifying insects. Participates in public outreach activities and review and development of outreach and educational materials. The incumbent will be expected to contribute to the success of Penn State Extension’s “Atlas” business strategy (http://agsci/edu/atlas) where appropriate. Assists with the curation of the Frost Insect Museum and development of appropriate reference specimen collections. Particular focus may be on the identification and detection of invasive insect species threatening food security and animal and human health. Response to questions and concerns related to invasive species and relevant regulations and permits will be expected. This job will be filled as a level 3, level 4, or level 5, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum M.S. degree in entomology or closely related program. Experience with the taxonomic identification of insects and related arthropods. Knowledge of invasive, household and ornamental pests and their management is highly desirable.
