Lana,
In 1995 the Association of Medical Illustrators published "The History of
The Association of Medical Illustrators."  It includes a short chapter on
medical and scientific illustration prior to the AMI and points to a lot of
other references.

I'm not sure what the cost of the book is, maybe $10-$15, but you can call
AMI Headquarters in Atlanta if you're interested in getting one.  It's
about 220 pages.
