About the Artist
Kate studied biology and studio art at Smith College (1993) and trained in
scientific
illustration at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, where she worked
as a
freelance and staff illustrator for eight years. In 2000 the Tuna Research
and Conservation
Center, of Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station and the Monterey Bay
Aquarium,
invited Ms. Spencer to visit as Artist in Residence to study and illustrate
bluefin tunas. The
fish, the whales in the Bay, and the wonderful Monterey Peninsula community
seduced her
to move to California in 2001. She currently paints out of her art studio in
Monterey.
