The software I just bought was PowerRip, for Epson, $89. Maybe the price
difference is for the different model printer.

I haven't solved the printer port problem yet, haven't had time to work
on it actually. I let you know what happens if I ever get it going
(indeed, if I ever do! Ouch, Paul - I hate to read messages like yours
after I've already bought the software. At least I know what to look out
for!). I run Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark, so I'll give it all a
try.
