Clara,

 I never have messed much with tiffs in Illustrator, I couldn't stand the
idea of having it blot my illustrator file with an ASCII text data type
(takes up much more room than binary data).

There may be some color handling settings in Illustrator somewhere that
will help, but maybe not.  In Illustrator 7 a little window pops up and
asks me to characterize the image. This will definitely effect how it is
output!

I would recommend you resave your Photoshop file as a binary EPS and import
it as a Placed image. EPS files always pass through the original data to
the print RIP, so that may solve you problem. It is worth a try in a test
document.  Unless you absolutely need the resolution that illustrator shows
with imbedded TIFF files (for positioning of details over a scanned image),
I would stick with Placed EPS files, until color handling issues become
more clarified.

As an alternative experiment, try the EPS route but imbed the file instead
of placing it.  It gives the nice sharp preview as a tiff, and it doesn't
ask you to characterize the image, so it should pass the original data on
through.

Now there may be other issues with Illustrator and the RIP you are using,
but I would try a test first with all three image types in one document and
see what happens.
