which will focus on Archeological Illustration, and be held at the Center for
American Archeology (CAA), Kampsville, IL. It looks to be a fun week - if you
have any interest in archeology and illustration, please join us!
We'll arrange carpools for those planning to attend the GNSI Meeting in Ames
the following week - it's about 350 miles from Kampsville to Ames (that's
nothing here in the midwest! ;-) ). You may do the "paperwork" portion of
registration online at the CAA website (address below). Note that we spell
"Archeology" without the extra "a" that some use - you won't get to the
webpage if it's not spelled this way!

1998 Summer Workshop:
Archeological Illustration
Sponsored by the Center for American Archeology, Kampsville, IL
June 14 - 20, 1998
This focused workshop is designed for artists with an interest in depicting
archeology, and those with an archeology background and interest in art who
would like to combine these interests to produce accurate scientific
illustrations. Participants will experience archeological research firsthand,
and learn how to depict the wide variety of subject matter encountered when
working with archeologists.
The Week
The Center for American Archeology offers a unique setting, where sites and
artifacts spanning over 12,000 years of prehistory are available for study and
illustration. Each day participants will concentrate on a different subject
that could be encountered by an illustrator working with archeologists -
lithics (stone tools), ceramics, bone, historic architecture and artifacts,
and field work. CAA staff archeologists specializing in the day's topic will
familiarize the students with the subject matter, pointing out what
information is important to the archeologist. Instructor Liz Hansen will
present the standards and techniques used to record such information, and then
students will work to produce accurate illustrations. A variety of evening
events will be available; ecology hikes, lectures, lab tours - there may even
be time to socialize and relax! For those students who wish to arrive a day
early (Saturday June 13), there will be an optional field trip on Sunday to
Cahokia Mounds, site of the largest prehistoric structure north of Mexico
City, and where a city of up to 30,000 people lived 1000 years ago.
The Instructor
Liz Hansen has been the Sr. Illustrator & Photographer at the CAA since 1986.
After earning her B.S. in Scientific Illustration from the U of MN in 1983,
she worked as an Exhibits Assistant at the Bell Museum of Natural History, and
Field Biologist for the US National Park Service prior to arrival in
Kampsville. At the CAA, she prepares illustrations and photographs for site
reports, books, newsletters, educational materials, museum exhibits, and
promotional materials. Ms. Hansen instituted an internship program for
scientific illustration students that has benefitted both the students and the
CAA. A GNSI member since 1986, she presented lectures on Archeological
Illustration at the 1996 &1997 GNSI Conferences, and a workshop on the topic
at the 1996 Conference.
The Setting
The Center for American Archeology is located in tiny Kampsville, IL
(population 400), about 70 miles NNW of St.Louis, MO. Today this is a rural
area, with no fast food in the entire county, no movie theaters, and the local
cusine is "Midwest-fried"! Prehistorically, however, the green hills and
hollows, abundant wildlife, and dramatic bluffs outlining the wide floodplain
valleys of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers sustained many different groups
of people, with a wide range of cultural traditions. The CAA has used a
multi-disciplinary approach to archeological research in this area for over 40
years.
Housing and Meals
Participants will stay in CAA dormitories in Kampsville, sharing rooms and
bath facilities. A kitchen is available, with stove, microwave, and
refrigerator. Meals are included each day of the workshop, and special dietary
requirements can be accomodated. Weekend meals will be the student's
responsibility.
Transportation
Participants can get to Kampsville via plane, train, or automobile. Air
travelers should arrive at Lambert Field in St.Louis; train passengers should
take Amtrak to Alton, IL. CAA staff pickup and delivery to these terminals can
be arranged for an additional fee. There is no public transportation to this
area!
Tuition, Room, and Board
$500 for GNSI or CAA members
$550 for non-members
AMI Continuing Education credit applied for.
The deadline for application is March 20, 1998. Early enrollment is
encouraged, as enrollment will be limited to 20 students. Acceptance will be
based upon a portfolio (slides, or good copies) of 5-10 examples of previous
work and a short statement of intent; see application form. Basic drawing
experience is a prerequisite for this workshop.
