another good resource for the black ink (and many other) question is "Digital
Prepress Complete", O'Quinn & LeClair, Hayden Books 1996. despite the fact
that the authors harp on quality control and attention to detail and have a
book full of typing, grammar and spelling errors (i wanted to red-line the
whole thing but restrained myself), it's been a good resource for me to begin
an understanding of digital prepress.

thanks for all the helpful comments on Lab to RGB to CMYK conversion - guess
i'd better find a friend at the printer! so far all the conversions i've
tested look ok except for one really beautiful blue that got shot down to a
slimy grotesque gray parody of itself (does it sound like i was disappointed,
maybe?).
