Nancy et al,

Just got onto this listserve and am enjoying the threads...mostly
computer-oriented, which doesn't completely surprise.

Silverlining is a formatting tool for various drives and used to come
well-recommended. But, in about 1991? an graphic designer associate that
began using it on a new drive he'd bought, began having major problems
and eventually had to toss his drive since it became so corrupted. Then,
my brother-in-law had major problems with it, too.

Through associates at work at the Univ. of Oregon, my husband was told
to watch out and avoid Silverlining, too. It is known to be
incompatible with newer Apple systems, it tends to corrupt data, and may
eventually destroy or remedy unrecoverable the data on your drive!!

We just upgraded to MacOS8, too, like many others on this list, and did
NOT do a clean install. But, we did get driver updates for our external
APS drive and our scanner. Even so, we still had problems with the
printer software and had to reinstall that, and we had to do several
days of troubleshooting to get back online after MacOS8 changed our
internet protocols to the wrong ones. Thankfully, the UO computing
center folks are absolutely great and very helpful.
