Hey all -

I'm starting to get a few questions, so thought I'd go ahead and bring
you all up to date on what we've been cooking up for the annual meeting
next summer in Richland, WA (Aug 7-14). While all is not yet set in
stone, it's getting nailed down - of course things are subject to
change, but that's life. All of the instructors are super-top-notch, and
I'm just running through the names and subjects for now, rather than the
full-blown, VERY EXCITING descriptions that will follow later.

(if no day is given, that means the scheduling isn't yet worked out)

Traditional Workshops:

Betty Pat Gatliff, 2 day forensic sculpture (Thursday and Friday)
Lynette Cook, 1 1/2 day multimedia color
Kathy Barker, silverpoint, 1/2 day
Trudy Nicholson, scratchboard, 1 day
John Cody, watercolor, 1 day (Sunday the 8th)
Jenny Keller, 2 day field workshop to Mt. Rainier (Friday aft-Sunday
morning the 15th)

Computer Workshops:

Steve Buchanan: 1/2 day intermediate, 1/2 day advanced Photoshop
(scheduled for Sunday the 8th)
Frank Ippolito: beginning and intermediate Photoshop, 1/2 day each.
Karen Ackoff: Quark (design, layout, etc)
Jane Eckelman: Freehand (beginning cartographic compilation skills,
tracing, etc. - applicable to other types of illustration)
Prof. Ev Wingert, U of HI: DEM's/GIS, 1/2 day; full day landscape
rendering in Bryce, freeware. (EXTRA couple of hours in World
Construction Set promised for those interested)

Other Workshops:

Mark Ortman, award winning author and publisher, on the nuts and bolts
of self-publishing, 1/2 day.

Field trips:

Ornithology, Dr. Dan and Barbara Gleason
Landform sketching
Arid Lands Ecology Reserve
Geology (Channeled Scablands)
Archeology (dig site!)
Columbia River (Hanford Reach)
Rattlesnake Mountain Observatory (?)
plus MORE.

Core presentations, panels, workshops, demos, etc., will include:

3-D computer modeling with Frank
Websites for REAL beginners
Web page editing
Powerpoint
Computer calibration
The four ways to publish or get published, Mark Ortman.
Co-op publishing, Amelia Janes. (her NEW BOOK project!!)
Beginning museum sculpture techniques
Studio issues panel
Kennewick Man!
Technique boutique, misc.techniques
Plus MORE!!

I'm sure I must be leaving out something somewhere.

We've got a REAL TREAT for the keynote speaker - I won't yet divulge
that information!

Also wanted to mention that even though we will be hotel-based, it
doesn't mean more expensive. Rates will run from about $25 to $40 per
night double occupancy, including continental breakfast; for single
occupancy, $45 to $70, breakfast included. We'll have three full days of
workshops (Sunday, Thursday and Friday), with the workshop rates running
from about about $75 for full day to $25-40 per half day, depending on
the workshop and length of it. Core will probably run around $145, which
will include a couple of lunches, a nice dinner banquet at the Columbia
Crest Winery, and a couple of receptions. Within EASY walking distance
of the hotels are many eating and drinking establishments, from fast
food to gourmet. So all in all, if you need to submit a budget to your
boss, those're some rough figures.

To refresh your memory, you can fly right into the Tri-Cities Airport in
Pasco (15 minutes away from meeting site), hotel transfers provided if
necessary, car rental availbale at the airport. Delta has jet
connections out of Salt Lake City, and Horizon, United, Northwest have
commuter flights out of Portland and Seattle. Driving time from either
Portland or Seattle is about 3 1/2 hours, if you don't stop to take in
the incredibly gorgeous scenery in between either place and Richland.

And there's still time and room for suggestions....

Cheers,

Cindy
