Miriam, Each flight attendant is personally responsible for a fine if they
allow you onboard with oversized objects.  A way around this is to get a
good garmet bag which has ample room for tubes, boards,portfolios etc. Hand
it to the attendant as you enter the plane.  It will travel first class even
if you don't. Sew pockets into the inside and you won't even have to carry a
suitcase.
