I'm new to this list, and new to the field of Science Illustration, but
I've been free lance writing for the last 8 years- I was amazed to find
that you folks expected publishers to pay on acceptance. It's common
practice in the writing world to only get paid on publication. You try
like heck to stick with pubs that pay on acceptance, but that's often
not possible unless you are a big wig author- and evidently some of them
get paid on publication occasionally as well.

About the only worse thing is writing on spec- no contract, no promises,
and no expense account- do illustrators do that, too?
