I just had a research scientist from the Entomology Dept.
here at the Academy ask for some input. He's putting
together a grant proposal and will include a fee for art
work. He wonders what hourly rate he should put in the
proposal. I suggested putting the question out to all of
you, and then giving him the feedback: the range of answers
as well as the average dollar amount suggested.

Specifics: the work requires a part-time freelance artist,
working on-site (in the Academy's Entomology Dept.) and on
Academy equipment. The art would be computer-generated,
morphological line drawings of wasps using Adobe
Illustrator. The project is on-going for about three years.

In the past he's paid $12 per hour for similar work, and was
lucky to find a couple people who would do the job. Most
illustrators who tried for the job walked out when they
found out how little it paid. He and I had once talked
about $25 per hour being a good minimum. I know, I know,
          that's not the greatest either.

Okay, so here's your chance: what hourly rate would you
          require for this job?

Thanks for any and all comments.
