1. I have always used Quark in 2 page spreads.  If you have material that
crosses the gutter, Quark will automatically use material from the other
page for bleed when doing negtitives.  The only place this might not apply
is on the first and last page of a file, which are normally a single page.
There you may have to manually adjust the bleed objects from the master
page.

If you are suppose to be doing "Just" a spread,  The standard cheat has
always been to insert a blank page as page 1 and then work on page 2 and 3,
or place 2 pages together on the right hand side of the page layout window
and forget the master pages altogether.  Alternately design two single
master pages with bleeds and apply each to a seperate pages,  but I don't
know how the bleeds will behave over esch other.

2.  Sounds like your Copy of Quark got confused in RAM or your file got
corrupted.  If it worked after you restarted Quark, that is the answer.
