Towards the Integration of the Symphonic Repertoire
Musical Analysis Applied to the Research on Wind Bands

New Deadline: July 20th, 2020

One of the most important challenges that current Spanish musicology must
face is the integration into its studies, in a coherent and balanced way,
of musical analysis. However, we must avoid implementing it as a complex
theoretical exercise, which tends to remain empty of content if it focuses
on a mere description of the musical object. On the contrary, we have to
understand it as a functional tool that allows us to study the scores
according to the context in which they were created. Hence, the necessity
of elaborating new methodological proposals that seek a constant balance
between cultural history and music theory emerges with a clear aim: to
understand the technical characteristics of the different repertoires, but
without neglecting their relationship with the context and considering the
different communication processes that are established between composers
and the audiences.

Since wind bands are considered a first-rate agent of social cohesion, they
cannot be relegated of these approaches if we want them to be integrated
into the general musicological discourses. Therefore, the present dossier
on musical analysis applied to the research on wind bands aims to be the
first contact with a field that is going to be explore in depth within a
close future. Yet, it starts here with a double objective: first, to
achieve more visibility and the consolidation of the band repertoire, in
which, of course, new compositions must be included; and, second, to move
towards an integration of the symphonic repertoire that put aside the
pejorative hierarchization that the classic band-orchestra dichotomy
usually supposes.

Consequently, we propose the following topics, without that meaning the
possibility of taking into account other ones not included in the list:

- Structural analysis and strategies of composition
- Hermeneutic analysis and musical semiotics
- Topic theory
- Interpretative analysis and performative studies
- Analysis of the meanings and the emotions
- Historically informed musical analysis
- Transversal analytic approaches
- Integration of the analysis in the cultural circuits
