University of Southampton: Hartley Residencies in Music, 2016-2017

We have the great pleasure in announcing our third year of Hartley Residencies at the University of Southampton.  Each event consists of a formal presentation and roundtable as outlined in the timetable below, a formal presentation by one of Southampton’s own scholars, and various preparatory events for MMus and PhD students.

The timetable for the 2016-2017 academic year is as follows:

15-16 November 2016: Simon McVeigh (Goldsmiths, U of  London)
‘Out of the box into the fire: Writing about Edwardian musical culture from multiple perspectives’
Roundtable on big data, small data and challenges for musicology

14-15 March 2017: Lawrence Zbikowski (U of Chicago)
‘Preconditions for the Construction of Musical Meaning’
Roundtable on social implications of musical interactions

2-3 May 2017: Peter Schubert (McGill U, Montreal)
‘Chord progressions in Renaissance polyphony?’
Roundtable and workshop on improvisation in the Renaissance

26-27 June 2017: Newton Armstrong (City University London) and Oliver Coates.
‘Listening as Material in Compositional Thought and Design’
Roundtable on composer and performer perspectives on electroacoustic music
