(Ethnomusicology)*
The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music seeks to appoint a Lecturer/Senior
Lecturer in Music (Ethnomusicology) with teaching and research expertise in
at least two areas, one of which should be an area of popular music or
Indigenous Australian music. The appointee will be expected to make a
significant contribution to the teaching, coordination and provision of the
undergraduate and graduate music programs of the Melbourne Conservatorium
of Music (MCM), maintain an active research profile, and attract high
quality students into the Honours, Masters and PhD programs in
Ethnomusicology.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent is expected to make a significant contribution to the
teaching, research and impact effort of the MCM and in particular the area
of Ethnomusicology, and to carry out activities to maintain and develop
professional activities relevant to the profession. Specific duties
include: the co-ordination of non-Western performance ensembles and
guardianship of collections, teaching undergraduate core subjects, breadth
and academic electives. Also, supervising and marking undergraduate essays,
plus honours, masters and doctoral theses, applying for external research
grants, participating in and attending scholarly seminars, forums and
activities, and undertaking research that is disseminated at conferences,
in journal articles, book chapters and other scholarly, ERA-reportable
output.
MELBOURNE CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC
The MCM has over 900 full time equivalent students and is the largest
Conservatorium in Australia. In April 2009 the former Faculty of Music and
School of Music within the former Faculty of the VCA became a single music
school within the Faculty of the VCA and MCM. The new MCM has a clear
vision for international excellence in music training, scholarship and
research. It is the most comprehensive music institution in Australia,
building on the distinctive strengths of the music programs offered by the
former music schools across western and non- western music performance,
musicology and ethnomusicology, music therapy, music performance teaching,
composition, conducting, and opera. It maintains a number of non- Western
ensembles including the Melbourne Community Gamelan—reputed to be the
finest sounding of all the gamelan in Australia—which was purchased in
Madiun, central Java, in 1990.
The MCM is also the most highly endowed in Australia with a large number of
bequests and scholarships that attract and support many of Australia’s
finest young musicians.
