The Illinois Student Association of Music Scholars (ISAMS) is pleased to
announce that we are accepting abstracts and proposals for our 2018
interdisciplinary graduate symposium, which will focus on the many ways
sound creates and intersects with diverse communities.
We are interested in how sound and community resonate with and construct
each other, and welcome boundary-crossing perspectives engaging this topic
from both scholarship and the performance arts. We invite presentations
situated in anthropology, composition, dance, ethnomusicology, musicology,
musical performance, and theater arts, as well as sound studies,
acoustemology, acoustics, media studies, and urban planning, among others.
Our aim is to cultivate a program of scholarly papers and artistic
presentations that illustrate the sound/music-community interface.
For Performers/Composers: We encourage pieces/performances that demonstrate
the notion of “sounded community” and/or “communities of/in/as sound.” This
may include artistic endeavors or works that, for example, draw together
communities, that advocate on behalf of communities, or that encourage
community collaboration.
Abstracts & Proposals:

Each paper or performance should be no longer than twenty minutes in
length.
-
Each presentation will be followed by ten minutes of Q&A or

requirements. NB: We are able to consider performances of compositions
