Hi Silvia (just down the road in San Jose!),
I did all the scanning for the tree book B&W, reducing while I scanned.
(Discussion on the listserv a while back suggested scanning greyscale - but
the files can be very large). The only control I used when scanning was
making something lighter or darker (I think lightening just removed some
pixels, like tiny stipples, so that heavily stippled areas could end up
appearing lighter). Sometimes I would manipulate an image in Photoshop, but
usually just rotating, erasing, etc.
The images and text, all laid out, went to the printer (La Nacion) on a
syquest cartridge.
