Select the white eye dropper icon in the dialog, then click on the
darkest part of the image that you want to be white. You can do the
same adjustments in the Curves dialog (and more).

Sometimes running the un-sharp filter twice with different settings
can be useful. I am not sure how useful on a B&W drawing. You can see
a quick view of the idea on this page:
