I have no good advice about editing AI text files. I know in version 5
there was a font bug that would kill your file if you used a particular
character of a particular font. You could also try blowing away everything
on that problem layer on a copy of the file. You might with a little
experimentation be able to find the layer markers and delete everything in
them that is not the same as around other layer markers.
