Lynne,
I've been listening to all the responses you've gotten about
how to handle the curious people. It was only a year (or less)
ago that I felt the same as the girl who wrote you that letter.
I must say, before too much time passes for me to empathize with
such people, that some response is definitely critical to these
students' continued enthusiasm.
I remember my first posting to this list. It was totaly dissatisfied
with school and looking for internships to figure out what kind
of scientific illustrator I wanted to be...if at all. Although
I didn't find an internship through this list, the responses I
received motivated me to keep searching until I was out of my rut.
It is extremely frustrating to not know what you want to do
just because you don't know what the possibilities are.
This list is to help people know what their possibilites are...
for any science-art problem.
(that's how I see it, anyway)
Although I've tried to remove myself from this list many times,
sometimes I'm glad it hasn't worked. (Those times when the
guilt of being a "Lurker" [I often feel like some kind of peeping-
Tom] :-) are over-ridden by what I learn from everyone.
Hope I can be of help for once,
Elena
