Hi -
You can see a lot of her work on the USDA National Agriculture Library website. They do not seem to be downloadable, but as they were done before 1911 (the year she died) they are in the public domain. Also, since they were done for the federal govt. while she was on staff for 19 years, they were never copyright restricted to my understanding. Under her name there are 1527 illustration images you can view.

The article says "she took a job in 1892 with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The USDA hired scores of artists at this time, mostly (but not entirely) women, whose job was to prepare a visual record of the thousands of varieties of fruit (and one presumes vegetables) that could be grown in American soil. Photography was now available as a record-keeper, but photographs could not yet record colors, and it was thought that the human eye and hand could do a better job anyway."
I believe I am the LAST in a long line of USDA Scientific illustrators. I am the only one in the entire Agency now, to the best of my knowledge. I have doubts they will replace me when I retire. Sadly, science has moved on. Though description and documentation of new species goes on, despite the growing lack on morphological taxonomists across all phyla, the majority of them are not using illustrators and seem to feel they do not need illustrations in their publications. I feel like such a dinosaur - staring into the face of the extinction of the craft I have practiced for 40 years. Phew!
But, as a profession, scientific illustrators are adapting - widening our expectations and view of ourselves as visual science communicators. Luckily for you younger folks, there is a LOT of exciting science that still needs communicating and wonderful new high tech tools to do it with. Rock on everybody.

Hi All,
Perhaps someone already mentioned this and I missed it. Deborah Passmore was featured on Jan. 3 as the Scientist of the Day. Very interesting article, and beautiful paintings.
