I promised our local chapter that I would post a notice of an
excellent upcoming traveling botanical illustration exhibit for those
of you in the Chicago/midwestern states area who might be interested.
I know weather is chancy mid- to late January but if you can make it,
I can assure you, it's worth at least a bit of a drive! The 44 works
in this juried show highlight the wonder and diversity of our
disappearing species. Peter Raven, director of the Missouri Botanic
Garden, wrote the introduction to the exhibition catalogue, with
additional essays by Sir Peter Crane; Katherine Kennedy, director of
the Center for Plant Conservation; Gary Krupnik, head of the Plant
Conservation Unit, Department of Botany, at the Smithsonian; and
James Miller, dean and vice-president for science of the New York
Botanic Garden.
The opening is Saturday, January 23, at the Chicago Botanic Garden in
Glencoe, IL, right off the I-94 highway. If anyone is coming from out
of town or sans car, it might be possible for us to arrange pickup at
the local Metra station - just send me a note! : )
It's sponsored by the ASBA but quite a number of GNSI artists are
participating, including our very own:
Bobbi Angell,
Carol Hamilton,
Dianne McElwain,
Joan McGann,
Lee McCaffrey,
Lesley Randall,
Beverly Simone,
Alice Tangerini,
Jee Yeon-Woo (and moi ; )).
(Did I leave anyone out? Please excuse any omissions or misspellings
and pipe up if you are also in the exhibit - I was working from the
2008 directory!)
It will also move to the New York Botanic Garden, the American Museum
of Natural History, and hopefully one west coast venue that is now
being discussed ; ).
So here's the scoop from the note from director of the Midwest Center
for Botanical Documentation, Derek Norman:
"As some of you may already know Carol Woodin (ASBA Director of
Exhibits & Botanical Artist)
will be here for the official opening reception of the ASBA Losing
Paradise? Exhibit - 4 p.m. - 6p.m.
Saturday, 23rd January, at the Chicago Botanic Garden. I hope
everyone will be there (together
with as many friends as you care to invite). It promises to be an
outstanding exhibit/event with unique
local connections.
For more information see:- http://www.chicagobotanic.org/
exhibitions/losing-paradise.php"
Hope to see some of you there (and I hope we're not completely
snowbound that day!)
