One of the difficulties in stating Indian (or Native American) artists should
do the work on the poster project is that definitions of who is Indian is now
a legal mess. Many Indians would be excluded because their tribes are not
recognized by government, others who are not of native blood ancestory would
be allowed because of acquired membership. This really is a serious problem.
Some art exhibits that have in the past been open to only Indians (Philbrook,
Tulsa, et al) now state that the work must be in the "Indian tradition or
style." Perhaps someday good sense will return regarding this matter of who is
Indian, but don't hold your breath in the meantime. Joan
