About the virus thing on the sciart listserv. I manage the list and we have
been doing this for about 7 or 8 years now and this is the very first time
a virus warning has gone out to the listserv.
The listserv computer here at UNL caught the virus and deleted the
attachment from it before sending it out to anyone on the list. I also
received about 20 error messages from various servers that the infected
message didn't not get delivered because of their specific virus blocking
Viruses usually get sent out without the person knowing their machine is
doing it. These people mean no harm cause they don't know it is happening
until it is already gone. Your best protection is to have up to date virus
protection software and run it on a regular basis. Don't open any
attachment you aren't positive you should be getting PARTICULARLY if it is
from a friend.
What does this all mean and how can we not do this again? Really nothing to
worry about. We can't totally prevent it but with the server here screening
all messages for potential viruses and you having up to day software AND
running on your system regularly, it shouldn't be a problem. The UNL server
will notify us if the it becomes a major problem and we will deal with it .
As a rule though, YOU SHOULD NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS TO LISTSERVS. They do
not like to have servers sending extra files out along with messages as it
takes alot of machine power to do so.
Anyways, that is what I know. Any other questions or problems, let me know.
