Besides the excellent reasons various people have given for using
illustration, I'd like to mention that there are areas in which photography
simply isn't possible. Reconstruction of extinct creatures is one.
Illustration (traditional or not) and model making are the only way to show
beings that are no longer around to be photographed. Then there's molecules,
atoms and the like -- things too small to photograph. The illustrator is
not exactly showing something as it is but rather interpreting in this case,
giving the reader a way to visually grasp the invisible.
