Here are a few more interesting facts about what you will be
seeing at Mariner's Museum:
The Mariner's Museum is dedicated to "illuminating mankind's
experience with the sea and the events that shaped the course and
progress of civilization."
International in scope, the collection is composed of more than
35,000 maritime items, including ship models, scrimshaw, maritime
paintings, decorative arts, intricately carved figureheads, working
steam engines and more. The Research Library and Archives houses some
78,000 volumes, 600,000 photographs and negatives, one million
manuscript items, 5,000 maps and charts, and some 60,000 drawings.
The library is home to the boat building archives of the Chris-Craft
Also on display are the gun turret from the USS Monitor. After resting
on the ocean floor for 111 years, the wreck of the USS Monitor wa located
by a team of scientists in 1973. The remains of the ship were found
16 miles off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (Outer Banks), on a
relatively flat sandy bottom at the depth of 240 feet. The Monitor's
hull lies upside down, with her deck resting on her displaced gun turret.
Hundreds of fragile artifacts, including the turret and its two Dahlgren
cannons, an anchor, steam engine and propeller, have been restored and
transported to the museum for conservation and display.
