Yes, if it pleases you, do it. But if the general style of the extant and
depicted items vary greatly from your design, it becomes more difficult to
assert that "this would have been done in period." I do believe that styles
changed greatly, depending on time, place and status. Find a style you like.
No one should create something they don't like/enjoy/admire simply because
there is documentation for it.
Conversely, if you wish to create something "documentably period", try your
best to consider the medieval viewpoint as you make design decisions.
