Thanks all for your comments. I've decided to buy a printer given the small volume of printing that i will be doing initially (and the fact that the family printer has gone kaput).
I'm debating whether to get the Epson R1900 or the Epson R2880. Does anyone have any opinions about these two printers?

We have an Epson 3800 pro that uses large ink cartridges. It's great, although it can't handle canvas, and the door on the front is likely to break. It prints up to 17x22, although with large sizes, sometimes it needs a little push on the top of the paper to feed correctly. If you search for comparisons, you'll see the cost savings from using large ink cartridges.

I changed the title to this question.
Maybe the Listserv folks who have their own printers will give more information. You'll have to add up the initial printer cost, the paper and ink cost. I have learned from friends that it may not be the initial printer cost that is the most costly, but the inks. If it can be determined how many pages you can get per cartridge(s), that should be part of the determination.
In your selection of printer and inks, you should research the archival nature of the inks and paper that is best for the inks
.
I use a professional printer. The time I would spend in maintenance, trial and error, color balancing, I could be working on another painting.

Any thoughts on the trade-offs?
