Another way to get an embedded file acidentally is to save your AI file as a PDF. Illustrator will 
open the PDF just fine, but the Imges willbe embedded.

The little dropdown menu on the links palette will offer the embed command if you have a linked file 
selected.

Using the File> Place... command should give you the Link option by default. There is check box at 
the bottom of the dialog.
