I am also on the Vertebrate Paleontology list serve, and there one can  
only post plain text. It's very annoying, because many messages appear  
saying:

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
*         ---REMAINDER OF MESSAGE TRUNCATED---            *
*     This post contains a forbidden message format       *
*  (such as an attached file, a v-card, HTML formatting)  *
*    This Mail List at USC.EDU only accepts PLAIN TEXT    *
* If your postings display this message your mail program *
* is not set to send PLAIN TEXT ONLY and needs adjusting  *
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

But perhaps the reason they have this rule is to avoid the problem  
we're having with the SciArt list. The Vert Paleo digest messages are  
never garbled.
