>Letter of intent to what?
I suspect it was mis-sent to this list. But to answer the question, a Letter
of Intent is a term used by the College of Heralds of a kingdom
in the SCA, that designates a compilation of coats of arms, badges,
and/or names that people within the kingdom would like to have
registered with the SCA College of Arms, together with such
research material that would support or not support
The Saker Herald is Calontir's herald in charge of the paperwork
involved with such things, both internally (internal Letters of
Intent) and externally (external LoI's) - she gathers a bunch of
arms or names, assembles the research material, organizes it,
types it up neatly into a letter,
and sends out an iLoI to Calontir heralds and others who help,
and then a while later collects all of the commentay, sums it
up, writes it down, assembles an _ex_ternal LoI, sends that out
to various heralds throughout the Known World, and repeat.
Eventually, all this mass of stuff reaches the Laurel Sovereign of
Arms and his/her staff, who collate, discuss, debate, and decide
which names and armory may be registered, or not registered,
and then assemble a LoAR (Letter of Acceptances and Returns,
which lists those elements that are accepted, and which need to
be returned for further work, together with a brief paragraph
or five as to what changes were made (if any) and/or reasons
for accepting or returning.).
"OSCAR" is the electronic system used by SCA heralds for
such thing, I believe; it was begun well after my sentence, errrr,
term as a herald.
I think I might have skipped or step or two; if so, I hope Bridiga
will correct me - and if I've stepped on her toes by offering the
above explanation, she'll certainly let me know about it, at which
point I will profusely apologize.
