"I believe it was a staple of the Blood of Hero's events"
Did Pavel have anything to do with dog ball?
Dog-Ball-msg (8K) 9/ 1/12 A sport played in standard SCA armor and polearms, based on a game in the movie "Blood of Heroes".
Blood of Heroes ran for well over a decade in fall in Grimfells. We never called The Game "Dogball" though, it was always just Blood of Heroes. The rules as linked were certainly close. However, the BoH rules evolved with the addition of rules named for the person that created the necessity for the rule. At the first BoH, Pavel expressly stated that the entire world was inbounds. So when I was the Quick, and my path was blocked by a couple of opponents, I veered off of the "normal" fighting area and went around the crowd. The two guys cut through the spectators to get me--but I outran them and scored. Thus the Kirk rule: "No using the crowd as a shield." On the very next play, since we were the League and won on ties, Ferd was the Quick. He grabbed the skull, killed the other quick, and headed as far away as possible, which meant the perimeter road of the park we were in. A pickup truck came along, and Ferd ran along with the pickup, keeping it between him and the opposition until time ran out. Thus the Ferd rule: "No playing in traffic." Others included the Tomeeki Rule, the Hereward Rule, the Sheridan rule, and many others.
