I had promised this story long ago. Anyone who remembers more or better please chime in:
Once Upon A Time, there existed the two halves of the critical mass of a nuclear bomb, and their names were Valans and Pavel. There also existed Pavel's friendly adversary, Lorell. There was an Estrella War at the Estrella Mountain State Park, and at the gate of that state park there was one of those old non-functioning cannons like you see in small town squares. And, there was beer.
As you can see, this is a combination with some potential.
The tales told later indicate that at some point, at a time that might have been after dark or after drunk, an experiment was performed to see if the cannon could be gotten into Lorell's tent while leaving both tent and cannon intact. Apparently this was indeed a doable action. And at some point in the event that I honestly do not know, Lorell noticed that there was a cannon in his tent.
That summer at Pennsic there were again gathered the potentially dangerous combination of Valans, Pavel, and beer. There was also present Lorell and his tent. And thanks to the Cavaliers who helped sound the beginnings of battles there was a very nice small but functioning cannon. And there was beer.
Even though it was spoken right after the incident when tales had yet to become Tall, I personally refuse to believe the claim that the cannon Lorell found in his tent was actually pre-loaded with a live charge -- I cannot believe anyone would be so irresponsible as to leave a loaded cannon on the battlefield day or night. But loaded or not the cute little cannon found itself in Lorell's tent.
All of which is why if you have a cannon aboard you cardboard ship, the cannon should be named 'Lorell's Tent'.
