In capturing label information on root weevisl from PNW collections, I spent hours to copy all those little tiny names of places and collectors. After a week at another institution I ran out of time and was able to find a student that I paid a decent amount out of pocket. She was glad for the work, I was glad to get on with other parts of my research, and wished I had thought of it sooner. Her pay was less than the hotel bills and per diem would have cost. She is acknowledged for her effort toward the total project as are the curators who provided access to the collections. Also, it would be nice to send a copy of that work to the curator to speed their digital efforts.

On these kinds of issues it might be best to have a longer list of authors on the paper BUT to have the taxonomic names authored by just the specialists. I'm not a huge fan of this as it can lead to problems tracking down papers if the authorship of paper is different from that of the taxa BUT it is a possible solution. Bob

Folks,
There is yet another side to this kind of thing. I'm involved in a big project overseas, which is where I am now taking heat over this very issue, and about half of the project personnel are in-country. This country's agencies, like most I've dealt with, expects their participating scientists to be co-authors even on paper topics they may not be directly familiar with, partly as a courtesy but also as part of the intellectual property agreements signed by the home institutions/countries. I normally don't have a problem with this but taxonomic revisions become problematic if the collaborator isn't familiar with the group. I like co-authors to be at least somewhat knowledgeable in the taxonomic group. In this arena flexibility is probably the best approach.

Dear All,

There has been some discussion of advisor-student authorship issues, but I think that the request that was posed to Mike really comes down to the "credentialist" attitude that pervades higher education today. Not only would authorship be nice for the undergraduate's resume, but also a feather in the cap of a department/advisor. As one who works at an undergraduate liberal-arts institution, I can attest to the fact that administrators and admissions counselors love to tout that their undergrads are co-authors on peer-reviewed research. It helps with getting Howard Hughes and REU grants as well.

I have to agree with many of the comments- part of museum curatorship is providing a service and data to the broader community.

Acknowledgements are much appreciated. Authorship is never expected or requested.

On the flip side, I think it is good practice to offer authorship to those you felt have made contributions to your work and that is something that I try to encourage in my students. I am hoping that they gain sense of the importance of collaboration and the need to attribute credit for the work that people do. However, if we were to borrow a specimen from another institution, we would not be likely to add the curator/collection manager as a co-author for providing a loan with the associated label data. We would certainly include them in our acknowledgements.

I agree with Bob's suggestion. Providing data and specimens, or sometimes images, to each other is what we all do (to the extent possible, which varies) as part of the ultimately cooperative enterprise of advancing studies of biodiversity. A co-author of a paper should be capable of discussing knowledgeably at least a significant part of the contents of the paper, which is unlikely to be the case in this situation.

Subject: Is co-authorship really this cheap

Perhaps I am an old fuddy duddy, stuck in some ancient view of things, and I would like to poll the community on a question.

One of my undergrads is doing a faunal project (Cerambycidae of Montana), and needed to see vouchers from a previous paper that did not record localities within Montana. Obviously, no one loans to undergrads, so I requested the material in my name, deposited 70 years ago in a large university collection in upstate New York. I gave two options: we could borrow the material, which we specified in detail, or just the locality data could be sent. The response was:

"I will have a look at the specimens to see what we have. I do not think it is worth the risk sending the specimens in the mail just for the data. If I asked one of the undergrads here to transcribe the data, would they be eligible for co-authorship on any publications?"

Have we come to a place where simply transcribing data from a loan request, with no intellectual input at all, is worthy of coauthorship? Irrespective of the implied tit for tat that changes how we have always provided loans as a service to the research community, the fact that someone in a position of responsibility at an Ivy League University considers that action intellectually valid for authorship appalls me. Am I wrong? I would love to hear if I am simply so out of touch that others think this would constitute a valid authorship contribution?

Mike
