The ITS Security team was notified about an attempt from a caller to convince an employee to let the caller remote to the employee's computer to "check out his computer". The caller tried several times and the employee continued to not fall for the scam. The employee told the caller there were UNL technicians that would look at the computer.

The phone number the caller was using was a toll free number - 855-832-4110. Another clue that the caller was not a UNL technician. The caller tried to convince the employee by leaving a name and ID number.

Thanks to an alert employee, the scam was thwarted. Make sure you are ready in case this happens to you. Watch for this not only at work - but at home as well. There is a well known scam where someone says they are from "Microsoft" and they noticed your computer was not responding optimally and they were calling as a courtesy to help get the computer to speed up. The caller convinces the computer user to install software and let the caller connect remotely. Once someone has remote access to your computer, they can steal your data, or install software to steal data later - all under the disguise of "helping" you.

Don't be a victim - protect your computer and your information from scammers!
