This year at War College May 6th in Amlesmore we are offering classes for non-fighters on
such topics as how to make a gambeson and how to make a coif.
For something different I decided to teach a class called, "Heraldry in War." I hope to cover
the origins of arms, their use on shields and surcoats to identify armored individuals, how
banners were used to identify individuals and armies. Once done with the historical material,
I plan to move on to practical SCA uses of heraldry in war. I will cover the basics of
heraldry, the importance of being able to identify arms, the use of badges to identify
members of armies, and the use of banners to identify groups of people. This will be an
interactive class with examples of devices that would be difficult to identify on the field. If
there is time we may play the game of "identity the arms of a Calontir noteworthy."
Other heralds are welcome to chime in. In fact, they are encouraged to as this will be my
first time teaching a class for those outside my shire.
