  1. Check page 95!! (8)

Yeah, good question, Mike.

I initially thought Blatchley might have had the F&G’s to work with (fold and gathered signatures that are the last step before binding), but then the Bulletin versions were numbered as well. So it was not just his privately printed copies that were being numbered. And then the handwritten numbers are always under the printer’s mark for the 7th signature; not the first or second, but the 7th…..

So, maybe he was into numerology and 7 was his lucky number?

Dunno. Our library used to stamp our copies with a date stamp on page 50 of books. So different folks pick pages to denote something for whatever reasons.

BTW: Our copy at bishop Museum is 263.

Cheers,

Neal

OK, Neal, you will be the one to unravel this: Why was page 95 chosen to
number? there has to be something that made that place easy to hit on?
Such a choice could not be random.

More info:

Hathi Trust has 4 additional copies online:
137 = Univ. Wisconsin Madison
191 = copy 1 at Ohio State
824 = copy 2 at Ohio State (parts 1 and 2 bound together)
375 = copy 3 at Ohio State (part 1 of another copy with parts bound separately)

Then there is one additional copy via Google Books:
a 39 = Harvard University (I cannot make out anything of the first handwritten symbol other than a lower case “a”).

BTW: Mike’s posted copy with a “5" derived from Princeton

Still it seems there were two printings but both printings have those handwritten numbers. The first printing was the Bulletin version and was apparently split into two parts (each with gray wrappers). The second printing “private” printing was bound as one volume. So, if there were two printings, were there then two separate hand numbered sets of 1-1000?

I tried to find an entry in the Catalogue of Copyright Entries” issued by the Library of Congress. Blatchley registered other of his “privately" published works in other years, but I just could not find the volume online for books for 1910! (ugh!).

Enough goofing off for me…

I am wondering if page 95 was at a particular point on an unfolded or folded printer's register? I would do the counting on this, but Mike F. is so good an minutia while goofing off (his terms, but I like it) that I will just suggest it. The reverse image mentioned by Michael S. might argue against that?

I've got 676. Looks like the book was closed before the ink dried because there's a reverse image on pg 94.

The numbers we have at least two examples of (2, 5, 6, 7) all look the same, so if it wasn't Blachley himself, I'd say at least the same person number the books.

We have two copies. 204 and nothing. Henry and Anne Howden’s copy had nothing written at the bottom of page 95.

I was goofing off as usual and was using my copy of Blatchley’s 1910 “An Illustrated Descriptive Catalogue of the Coleoptera or Beetles (Exclusive of the Rhynchophora) Known to Occur in Indiana”. It’s an original printing that I bought online back in 2007. Despite a little water damage, it’s a very clean copy with no writing. However, “512” is hand written in black ink at the bottom of page 95.

I checked all the other copies I could find (see attached) and all of them have numbers written at the bottom of page 95: 5, 362, 576, 961. All different and all below 1000.

Was each copy individually numbered? And, how many copies were printed?

There is some discrepancy about how many copies were printed.

Based on the front material of the book (see attached), it seems like only 1000 copies were printed at cost of $3,800 (or less).

However Mallis (1971) says: “Because the state refused to publish this as part of the Geological Survey, it was paid for out of other State funds. Blatchley personally paid for a private edition of 1,000 copies.”

Marché (2010) says: “Two printings of the volume were made: one funded by the State of Indiana and another private edition (of 1,000 copies) by Blatchley himself.”

All the copies I’ve looked at say “(Date of issue of this volume, September 20, 1910.)” at the bottom of page 1386. But that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Were there really two printings?

So check page 95 of your copy and report back! You might have number 1!

Cheers,

Mike

OK, Neal, you will be the one to unravel this: Why was page 95 chosen to
number? there has to be something that made that place easy to hit on?
Such a choice could not be random.

More info:

Hathi Trust has 4 additional copies online:
137 = Univ. Wisconsin Madison
191 = copy 1 at Ohio State
824 = copy 2 at Ohio State (parts 1 and 2 bound together)

Cheers,

Mike

OK, Neal, you will be the one to unravel this: Why was page 95 chosen to
number? there has to be something that made that place easy to hit on?
Such a choice could not be random.

More info:

Hathi Trust has 4 additional copies online:
137 = Univ. Wisconsin Madison
191 = copy 1 at Ohio State
824 = copy 2 at Ohio State (parts 1 and 2 bound together)

Cheers,

Mike

Subject: Check page 95!!

Cheers,

Mike

So check page 95 of your copy and report back! You might have number 1!

Cheers,

Mike

How neat; my personal copy is numbered “600” in black ink, slight bleeding to pg. 94

Looking for #1, but unsuccessful. The UC-Davis Library copy has 889 on page 95. There also is the number 2136 on page 3. See attached photos. I forgot to look at page 1386 for the publication date. If anyone is interested, I can go back to the library on Monday.

All the best, Kady

Subject: Check page 95!!

Mike
