I don’t know if anyone on this list has received this, but several AMI people have, so I thought I’d bring it up.
There is an elaborate scam going around.
I received an email from Aptar Group, which has a pharmacy division. They are a legitimate company - address, phone, etc. checks out. The email asks for designers and/or illustrators to work from home. The emails seem to be a little different from one another. Mine referenced a “hiring manager” for the AMI (which I assumed what an organization in France, as the email appears to have originated in France). This hiring manager appears in LinkedIn with a work history and currently employed by Aptar. What I caught was a small gender mistake in the email - this person, a woman, was referred to as “she” in one paragraph and “he” in another. The email asks to interview via Google Hangout, which allows for video conferencing, which also seemed a bit dodgy.
I posted about this in the AMI Hub and Jim Perkins at RIT responded. He and several of his students received a similar email. Like me, Jim looked into the company and it seemed legit. A student of his followed up further and “got the job”. The student was sent a check, and the “company” wanted the student to purchase gift cards with the money and return the cards to them (so they knew the money came through?). The student had the bank look into the check and they found it to be fake.
So - a heads-up to everyone - beware of this scam email. Stay safe out there.
