Anticipated Job Position
The Handbook of North American Indians is anticipating a possible 2-year
term appointment for an illustrator/cartographer/production person. The
Handbook is a 20-volume encyclopedia project and is part of the Dept. of
Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution,
Washington, DC.
Handbook volumes are approx. 1000 pages long, figures consists of photos,
line art, charts/graphs/schematics, and maps. All work is black & white,
line and halftone.
Selection Factors:
1.
The bulk of the work is prepress production. First, the size of the photos
need to be determined. Some figures consist of 1 photo; some figures
consist of 2-8 photos. Some photos are square halftones; some photos
require silhouetting and compositing. Many photos are historical -- old and
spotted; therefore they require careful retouching. The volume is being
prepared completely digitally -- we use PhotoShop to scan and adjust
photos; layouts are done in Quark. Macintosh platform. Occasionally,
Illustrator is used to created charts/graphs/schematics. The production
artist needs also to be able to do some troubleshooting on the computer in
order to keep the system up and running.
2.
Technical illustration skills are needed. The project requires scientific
illustration, such as illustrations of Native American artifacts (houses,
canoes, headdresses, fishing implements, etc.). Illustrations are generall
done in pen & ink; sometimes ink wash is used. Artist needs to be able to
perform any necessary research and write the accompanying caption. Artwork
is then scanned and prepared as described above. Formal training in
scientific and/or medical illustration is desired.
3.
Cartography skills are a plus. Adobe Illustrator is used to create maps.
Research skills, such as being able to locate historical villages and
reservation territories) are helpful.
The job requires working with a staff of editors and researchers - approx 6
people.
This requires someone who lives locally (to Washington, DC). It would
require a 40-hour week.
