I'm not sure why *you* renamed your old system folder. System 8 will do a
clean install, renaming the old system folder automatically. There is no
need to do it yourself. Just make sure you check the clean install option
in the dialog box.
I hope you did a clean install... either manually or automatically. A clean
install consists of 1) renaming the old system folder, 2) trashing the
finder, and 3) then installing the new system.
Doing a clean install makes a difference.
But to answer your question... yes, you can trash the old system folder
once you are confident you have salvaged everything you need from it.
